Removing the PKCI/HINT1 gene from mice has an anti-depressant-like and anxiolytic-like effect. Researchers writing in the open access journal BMC Neuroscience applied a battery of behavioral tests to the PKCI/HINT1 knockout animals, concluding that the deleted gene may have an important role in mood regulation.

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) has intensified its efforts to strengthen its support of young researchers. At its fall session in Bonn, the responsible Grants Committee of Germany's central research funding organisation approved the establishment of eleven new Research Training Groups. In these groups, doctoral researchers can earn their doctorates in a structured research and qualification programme.

BioInvent International, Daiichi Sankyo sign licence and discovery agreement

BioInvent International AB has announced that it has entered into a licence and discovery agreement with DAIICHI SANKYO COMPANY, LIMITED for the development of therapeutic antibodies against multiple targets. Under the terms of the collaboration, Daiichi Sankyo will be granted broad access to BioInvent's discovery and development technology platform and in house antibody expertise. As part of the agreement, BioInvent has secured certain co-promotion rights in Scandinavia and the Baltic countries.

The seeming invincibility of cancerous tumors may be crumbling, thanks to a promising new gene therapy that eliminates the ability of certain cells to repair themselves. Researchers at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine have discovered that inactivation of a DNA repair gene called Hus1 efficiently kills cells lacking p53 -- a gene mutated in the majority of human cancers.

The AIDS virus inserts its genetic material into the genome of the infected cell. Scientists of the German Cancer Research Center have now shown for the first time that the virus almost entirely spares particular sites in the human genetic material in this process. AvidBiotics Corp. announced the issuance of foundational patents encompassing a completely novel mechanism for generating massive diversity within precisely targeted sites of protein-encoding DNA sequences. The technology platform is referred to as Diversity Generating Retroelements (DGR) and patents were issued in both the United States (#7,585,957) and in Europe (#1,173,995). UCLA and AvidBiotics Corp are co-assignees of the patents, and AvidBiotics holds exclusive, worldwide rights to the patents from UCLA.
