Generic Hyzaar and Cozaar litigation: Court of Appeals rules in favor of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. announced today that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has ruled in Teva’s favor by overturning a July 31, 2009, district court decision which held that Teva forfeited 180-day marketing exclusivity for its generic versions of Merck's antihypertensive agents Hyzaar® (hydrochlorothiazide; losartan potassium) and Cozaar® (losartan potassium).

USPTO issues notice of allowance for Vanda Pharmaceuticals' Fanapt long-acting injectable formulation

Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a notice of allowance for its patent application of a microsphere, long-acting injectable formulation of its antipsychotic product, Fanapt™ (iloperidone). When issued, this U.S. patent will expire on October 30, 2022, and in addition, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted a patent term adjustment of 300 days, leading to an effective expiration date of August 26, 2023.

Patented chemical derived from sugar may be an alternative for BPA

Michael Jaffe, a professor of biomedical engineering at NJIT, has received a patent for a chemical derived from sugar. This new material is a derivative of isosorbide and may be able to replace bisphenol A (BPA) in a number of consumer products, including the lining of tin cans.
