Obecure granted patent covering betahistine with olanzapine for mitigating antipsychotic drug associated weight gain

Obecure Ltd., a subsidiary of Bio-Light Israeli Life Science Investments Ltd., has received notice of allowance from the US Patent Office for its two key patent applications covering methods of use and compositions covering the use of betahistine with olanzapine for the mitigation of the serious weight gain associated as a side effect of the antipsychotic drug.

Varian Medical Systems wins 100th X-ray tube patent

Varian Medical Systems, Inc., a premier supplier of X-ray tubes and flat panel digital image detectors, announced it has been awarded a patent for improved shielding in X-ray tubes. It is the company's 100th X-ray tube patent from the United States Patent Office.

Watson Laboratories files ANDA for generic Aplenzin ER in treatment of major depressive disorder

Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leading global specialty pharmaceutical company, today confirmed that its subsidiary, Watson Laboratories, Inc.- Florida, filed an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration seeking approval to market its 174 mg and 348 mg strength bupropion hydrobromide tablets prior to the expiration of patents owned by Biovail. Watson's 174 mg and 348 mg strength bupropion hydrobromide tablet products are generic versions of Biovail's Aplenzin™ ER, which is indicated for major depressive disorder.

Ethicon Endo-Surgery resolves longstanding patent litigation with Hologic

Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, announced today that it has reached an agreement with Hologic, Inc., and Hologic subsidiary Suros Surgical Systems, Inc., settling litigation in Ohio and dismissing pending cases in Delaware. The disputes involved patents relating to the Ethicon Endo-Surgery MAMMOTOME® Breast Biopsy System, and the Hologic ATEC and EVIVA biopsy devices. Under the terms of the agreement, Ethicon Endo-Surgery will receive $12.5 million from Hologic.

USPTO grants patent to Bellacure's drug-free treatment device for arthritis pain

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted a patent today to Bellacure, Inc. for its knee pain treatment device, which was designed to allow the patient to reproducibly apply a therapeutic force that urges the femur and tibia apart on the affected side of the knee at an unmatched intensity level while maximizing force efficiency and minimizing weight (United States Patent 7,662,122).

Soligenix, Inc., a late-stage biotechnology company, announced today that it has received a Hong Kong patent which addresses its Lipid Polymer Micelle (LPM™) technology for the improved oral delivery of drugs. CalciMedica granted U.S. composition patent concerning key component of CRAC channel

CalciMedica today announced that the US Patent and Trademark Office has issued to CalciMedica US Patent No. 7,645,588, a composition patent involving STIM1, a key component of the calcium release-activated calcium (CRAC) channel. The patent, entitled "Composition comprising a cell comprising a STIM1 protein and an agent that modulates intracellular calcium and methods of use," has a priority date of March 4, 2003 and was issued on January 12, 2010.

Teva Pharmaceuticals USA settles famciclovir patent litigation with Novartis

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. today announced that its subsidiary, Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., has signed an agreement with Novartis to settle patent litigation involving Teva’s U.S. generic version of Novartis’ Famvir® (famciclovir) 125 mg, 250 mg and 500 mg tablets including all claims for patent infringement and damages. Teva launched its generic famciclovir tablets in the U.S. in September 2007.

U.S. Court rules in favor of Perrigo over Mucinex patent litigation

Perrigo Company announced today that a federal court has granted summary judgment in its favor in patent litigation involving Guaifenesin Extended-Release Tablets, 600 mg, a generic version of Mucinex® tablets. Perrigo had been sued by Adams Respiratory Therapeutics, Inc., (a subsidiary of Reckitt Benckiser Group plc.) the New Drug Application holder and patent owner. The United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan ruled today that Perrigo does not infringe the patent in the suit. Perrigo's ANDA is awaiting FDA approval.

European Patent Office affirms validity of EuroMed's patent for Wrinkle-Resistant Wound dressings

EuroMed Inc. and Jentec Inc. today announced an important victory affirming the validity of a key patent, European patent number 1020198 (U.S. corresponding patent number 6878385) for Wrinkle-Resistant Wound dressings. In a ruling issued by the European Patent Office in Berlin, Germany, both of the grounds for opposition raised by the plaintiff, a prominent wound care manufacturer (i.e., extension of subject-matter, lack of ‘inventive step’ or sufficient originality) were not adequate cause to challenge the patent.

Edwards Lifesciences’ German Andersen patent not infringed by Medtronic's CoreValve transcatheter aortic valve system

Medtronic, Inc., announced today that an appeals court in Germany has found that the CoreValve® transcatheter aortic valve system does not infringe Edwards Lifesciences’ German Andersen patent, which is set to expire in May 2011. The appellate court’s decision upholds a lower court’s ruling and enables uninterrupted access to the leading transcatheter heart valve in Germany.

AVANIR Pharmaceuticals receives patent for low-dose quinidine formulations of Zenvia to treat PBA

AVANIR Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued the Company a new patent for its lead drug candidate Zenvia™ (dextromethorphan/quinidine), extending the period of patent protection in the United States into late 2025. U.S. patent number 7,659,282 titled "Pharmaceutical Compositions Comprising Dextromethorphan and Quinidine for the Treatment of Neurological Disorders" was issued on February 9, 2010. The new patent will provide AVANIR with patent protection for low-dose quinidine formulations of Zenvia used to treat pseudobulbar affect (PBA).
